Walk to the stone pines

This is one of four “Dendrochronological Paths of Stelvio National Park” in the Rabbi and Peio valleys. By contrast with the other paths, this one at Malga Mare, apart from old, big larch trees, also leads to some very large, several-centuries-old stone pines, which are very rare in the area.
Dendrochronology deals with the dating of annual tree rings in order to determine their ages; it has been used to reconstruct the historical land-use of woodlands and the economy of the valley in the past and for climatological research, which is becoming ever more important considering the present period of global warming.
The aim of this path is to give the visitor the opportunity to see these magnificent trees and to learn how much information can be obtained from them.
