Biodiversity inventory in relation to habitat typologies, human impact and vertebrates fauna

Project duration: 2009-2011
Area of interest: Settore trentino del Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio
Partner: Museo delle Scienze of Trento

Aim of the project was to contribute to the knowledge of the epigean arthropods in the Park. The arthropods were sampled in 21 different habitat typologies and with a
standardized sampling method: the pitfall traps. The analyzed taxa were beetles (Carabidae, Geotrupidae, Aphodiidae,Scarabaeidae, Melolonthidae, Rutelidae, Cetoniidae and Staphylinidae), and arachnids (Araneae and Pseudoscorpiones) for a total number of 350 identified species. On the base of the bioindicator features of carabids and spiders it has been possible to perform evaluations of environmental quality and human impact. Specifically, the effect of grassland (mown and pasture) managements and red-deer abundance was tested. Output of the project were the identification of species of natural and conservation values, and species new for the Trentino area and the Italian fauna.
