The woodpecker path

The Stelvio National Park offers to the visitors a special contact with wildlife, guaranteed by the conditions of peace that only a protected area can offer. In this context it is therefore easier to observe elusive and secretive species such as woodpeckers, birds that have developed special adaptations to life predominantly in woody environments. An help to find if this group of birds are present can be provided by looking at some specific signs of presence: the cavity of feeding and breeding, feathers, recent prey remains as well as a particular warbling song, issued primarily during the mating season. In our park there are five species of woodpeckers: the Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), the European Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis), the Grey-headed Woodpecker (Picus canus), the Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) and the Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus).
