Crooked wood

In the subalpine zone, the Krummholz (Ger.) zone - or crooked wood zone - is located above the upper tree line, where trees in their usual growth form can no longer exist. Krummholz consists of small, shrubby individuals, less than two metres tall, whose restricted growth is due to unfavourable environmental conditions and not to genetic causes.
