Red Deer Project

Period: 1998-2008

Area of interest: Trentino's area of the Stelvio National Park

Partner institution: Servizio Foreste e fauna PAT, Istituto Oikos, Associazione Cacciatori Trentini

In order to obtain definite responses to the problems created by the red deer population, bearing in mind the necessary protection of such an important species of great symbolical value, the Park has set up the “Red Deer Project”.
How many red deer are there in the Park? What percentage leaves the Park during the winter? How is the population developing and how does it affect roe deer and capercaillie? How healthy is the population and what is its real impact on woodland regeneration?
These are some of the questions the project has answered, in order to ensure the correct management of the species, at the same time guaranteeing the protection of a numerous and very conspicuous population.
The study is based on new census techniques, the capture and marking of over fifty individuals, an analysis of their movements and seasonal migration, as well as examining the population’s health.
