The arnica

Arnica montana

Arnica is a rather common plant species in the Alps, where it grows at rather low altitudes but also up to 2500m above sea level. In general, it prefers pastures and dry meadows with acid soils. Its flowering period varies with altitude, ranging from June at lower levels to August on high-lying grasslands.

In the past, in particular, Arnica was very popular for its medicinal properties: it does have, in fact, many different applications. It may be used internally or externally, although the external application was more common. Creams and ointments made from Arnica are, in fact, very effective remedies for the treatment of sprains and bruises.
